Conflict commodities such as diamonds, timber and cocoa have been fueling rebel wars in Africa for over a decade. We believe that these blood diamonds are in no way helpful to maintaining peace in the nations afflicted with these issues.
These commodities might cause a rebel victory against a legitimate government but in the end, those economic strengths wont hold up to support the government. These conflicts leave other nations in terrible economic dismay and their chances of rebuilding a strong economy much lower. These deficiencies will not only affect the nation involved in the conflict but all the nations otherwise involved with that country. We could be affected through trade mainly but possibly other economic outlets.
We stand behind the Kimberley Process and believe that it has worked wonders in diminishing the threats associated with the Blood diamonds. Even though the certification scheme is not one hundred percent effective, it is the best preventative measure that has been taken. Statistics on this issue are not well established and we must be able to identify the problem completely before we can solve it completely. We will continue to act and support the struggle against conflict commodities.
