Technology and industry are currently growing at exponential rates worldwide. Despite the fact that The U.S. is facing what is known as a recession, technology and commerce are increasing rapidly elsewhere. For the most part, the global economy is seeing changes for the better because of increased developments and technology. Because of global industrialization, the health of our planet has suffered. Keeping in mind its developing status, many regions and communities in Palestine are ignorant to the environmental issues caused by increased industry and development.
Many people of Palestine lack the resources, mainly money, to be “environmentally friendly.” Many don’t consider the long-term effects of increased pollution to their air, water, and land. These people go without the information needed to be conscious of the harm pollution causes. Pollution is a major issue in Palestine. Clean drinking water is scarce, sewage water is a never-ending problem with limited plants for treatment, waste disposal sites are growing in size and quantity, and etc. Overall the nature of Palestine’s environment is by no means impressive. One would think that the government of the people would take more action. There are few non-government organizations that contribute to promoting sustainable development in Palestine. The Rural Center for Sustainable Development-Palestine among others is one example which tries to make known the issues and consequences of harming the environment of Palestine and the rest of the world.
Palestine has a lot of issues that need to be address. With the development of their industry and of course the ongoing suppression of neighboring enemies (Israel), environmental issues take a back seat to things that Palestinians find more important. Becoming a globally recognized nation was the dream of Revolutionary hero, Yassir Arafat, and therefore is the ultimate goal in the minds of the Palestinian people. These goals outweigh environmental issues, therefore sustainable energy is not as heavily promoted in Palestine as is necessary.
