In 1999 the Democratic Republic of Congo, along with five other states, signed the Lusake agreement, which ended an extremely bloody regional conflict. As part of this agreement the United Nations deployed 16,700 peacekeeping troops and 450 policeman to ease the transition to a democratic form of government. In June of 2007, the DRC saw it's first parliamentary election under the Lusake agreement, however there were numerous problems reported with the voting system, which caused several leading parties to boycott the election. Violent confrontations followed the election, between the police and the protesters who alleged election fraud. Also, in September of 2007conflict broke out in the Eastern Congo between the government and renegade troops along with other groups, forcing thousands of civilians to flea their homes.
The Syrian government currently holds a peaceful position regarding the war in the Congo, with 234 peacekeeping troops, we hope to help the effort to encourage a peaceful and cohesive government. Following the point in 2005 when our honorable representative Mikhail Wehbe voiced that the attacks on the Congolese government were unjustified, Syria had no involvement.
In the current time, as stated earlier, we have placed 234 peacekeeping troops in the Congo, which we hope will aid the people and government to bring them closer to a time when their government and people can be safe. Also, the Syrian government is currently donating 7.5 million to the world food program, which actively distributes food and needed resources to the people of the Congo that have been either driven from their homes or driven to starvation by the rebel forces. The rebel forces are inflicting their ways upon the people of the Congo, and also recruiting young children to fight in the war.
We would like to point out our newly formed agreement with Italy concerning the world food program. The exhibition highlights a strong commitment to the environment and development in the Mediterranean with emphasis on natural resource management and sustainable development through cooperation between Italy, Syria and FAO.
The attacks on the Congolese government and the people were unjustified, cruel , and for which reasons we voice our support for a peaceful agreement that will put a stop to the war in the Congo. We hope that a resolution will be drawn up that will make all the countries involved in this war pleased and satisfied. We also hope that this resolution will put a halt to the war and the abuse of the Congolese people, and bring back a peaceful government that will work in the best interest of the world community around them and for the internal dealings of this country.
