The United States of America is deeply disturbed by the persecution of gay and lesbian individuals. In many countries, it is illegal to express homosexual traits or actions. For the most part, these countries punish those who perform homosexual acts by a jail sentence of a couple of years or more. However, in some countries, the punishment is much worse. To make matters worse, anti-homosexual groups and some governments believe in the execution of homosexuals. These unjust persecutions occur on a daily basis, and the United States urges other nations to put a stop to them.
Many attempts have been made to prevent persecution of gays and lesbians. In 2003, the European Union (EU) proposed the Brazilian Agreement, which urged countries to protect the rights of homosexuals. However, this agreement did not get past the draft stage. Later, the Yogyakarta Principles were written, supporting human rights for all, including gays and lesbians. Most recently, the EU created the UN Declaration on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity. This is a declaration that the United States and almost all of our allies have supported, but failed because of the opposition from many Islamic nations.
As we meet, the United States encourages the members of the UN to take action against this unjust persecution of gays and lesbians. The United States expresses its hope that a resolution supporting the rights of the gay and lesbians will be passed. With an effective resolution passed, the United States hopes to protect the rights of the gay and lesbian individuals.
