There will be no peace in the world until nuclear weapons cease to exist. The Republic of Somalia wholeheartedly condemns the usage of nuclear weapons and seeks the abolition of these weapons. Therefore, we feel it necesary that North Korea stops its nuclear ambitions and joins the UN Security Council in calling for the North Korean government to participate in the six-party talks, as stated in Resolution 1874 adopted in May.
Is is detrimental for world peace if North Korea does not return to the six-party talks. We also call on North Korea to renounce its withdrawal from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, signed by 189 countries. We urge other countries to stop financial aid to Noth Korea. Somalia will not provide assistance to North Korea, and will comply with the Security Council's request to search North Korean cargo ships. We call on other countries to do the same. Somalia also calls for a peaceful resolution to the conflict in the Korean Peninsula. Somalia hopes to see a united, democratic Korea. We support the South Korean governments efforts to do so. We believe the world will not see a united Korea if the North Korean government continues to ignore the UN's request and continue its isolationist policies. Somalia would also like to call attention to other countries uses of nuclear weapons, like Israel. We believe it is not appropriate for any countries to have nuclear weapons, and Somalia will do all that can be done to prevent the usage of these fatal and unnecesary weapons.
