Violence in the international drug trade has always been an issue, but due to recent changes implemented by nations with heavy drug trafficking, the issue has escalated and is continuing to do so. As a result of Mexico’s president, Felipe Calderon attempting to regulate a crackdown on drug cartels, thousands of citizens and troops have subsequently died in the process. Although efforts have been taken to decrease the trafficking of drugs in Mexico, such as the deployment of troops, an explosion of drug violence has occurred, leaving many people dead.
Pakistan realizes the urgency of the situation regarding increasing drug violence, and urges this committee to suggest solutions for the problem at hand. Ways to aid the countries affected by increasing drug violence are to suggest solutions which will protect their national sovereignty while providing assistance that has not previously been offered by the countries' governments.
In Pakistan, we have divided the decreasing of drug trafficking and its violent consequences into three sub-programs. They are illicit trafficking and border management, criminal justice, and drug-demand reduction and HIV.
The nation of Pakistan has taken some necessary steps towards managing the crisis presented by drug trafficking in its own country as well as Iran and Afghanistan. The countries have signed the UNODC, and it has effectively decreased the trade of drugs in these countries. Consequentially, violence stemming from drug trafficking has declined. If other nations are willing to sign treaties and documents similar to the UNODC, positive results would surely occur as they have for Pakistan.
