Preserving the world we live in today using green initiatives is a major concern of the Republic of Maldives. As a country made up of 1,190 islands, the Maldives are very sensitive to sea level rise because of the low elevation of the islands. If the sea level were to rise as a result of global warming, the Maldives could potentially be completely submerged under water, resulting in one less country. To prevent global warming, the Maldives is in favor of preventing pollution from ships, the protection of the ozone layer, and the proper disposal of hazardous wastes.
Since the Maldives is a major area for tourism, they plan for eco-systems to be enhanced, rather than destroyed, during the developments of this country. Awareness programs are provided for guests participating in tours of the islands which helps extend awareness to peoples of other countries. In many places of the Maldives, there are L.E.D light systems which have a longer lifespan and consume less energy. The bio-degradable cleaning products used are also extremely better for the environment.
To expand awareness, the Maldives is a big supporter of the Law of the Sea, and they are trying to spread knowledge of climate change, global warming, and pollution, which, as a small country, is not easy. The Maldives believe that the UNEP has a major duty to clean up the world's environment. Global warming can be put to a stop by reducing, reusing, and recycling. Reduce the pollution from ships and the hazardous wastes being dumped into the precious oceans, reuse “grey” water for irrigation systems, and recycle plastics. All it takes is the support of other countries like the Maldives.
