The people of Colombia have faced many political conflicts over the past 40 years. The violent and extreme opposition to Hugo Chavez's populism, massive social protests in Bolivia and Peru, and Ecuador's constant political and social instability have all been a problem for the people of Colombia. The issues of our neighboring countries have impacted us, and we are currently doing our best to improve the situation while keeping calm. Surely the delegation of Colombia will be able to put forth effort and solutions to better our current situation.
Many of the presidents in Colombia have tried to implement some peaceful methods of conflict resolution in our country, but mainly they have failed. President Betancur did not reach the important social figures in his campaign for peace. He failed to reach the military, the Catholic church, and important business representatives. Such well respected? members of the country are necessary for the political advancement of our nation. Current and future projects must learn from the past and succeed where previous presidents failed.
In 2004 a peaceful implementation was intended for our nation, but it ended up being halted by the constant internal and domestic conflicts of the country. The plan was tied up in the pressing issues of violence and never quite accomplished anything. Fortunately the failures of the Barco and Betancur regimes are history. We have learned from our mistakes and although the progress has not been great it is evident.
While Colombia has faced dire situations in conflicts in the past nobody really knows the perfect way to deal with a peaceful solution toward violence. Major steps have been taken in the past in order to minimize violent conflict in Colombia, but we are far from a solution to our problems.
