Illicit drugs are a major problem in the world today. Recognizing this, Cuba has taken action, and continues to work to solve the situation. Cuba, as a country surrounded by tropics and tourists, has the false image of an ideal country to smuggle drugs in and out of the country. This is because how Cuba control's its borders and its nation. Cuba regulates its waters quite regularly, and does the same with inside of its borders. Cuba, on top of having search teams, has a severe punishment for any type of drug trafficking, with jail sentences lasting up to twenty years. Through the years, Cuba has made a large effort to work with other countries to stop the spread of drugs. Cuba works with around forty other countries to monitor the spread, and hopes to continue this in the future. The efforts that the Cuban government have made have made a significant on the illicit drug trade.
While the current efforts Cuba has in place are quite effective, they are not perfect, with most of the illicit trade going to the United States. Cuban officials work hard to stop the flow of drugs, but could use help from the United States to stop the flow. Cuba feels that is necessary for countries to share the responsibility of stopping the flow of drugs. If countries can work together, than a big portion of this issue may be improved.
Cuba feels that is the responsibility of the state to make sure that it targets all drug organizations to catch the drugs before they are smuggled out of the country. Cuba also feels that this can be done by any means necessary, and that a specific section of either police officials or military should be designated to control the issue.
