On the topic of Improving Accountability at the United Nations India believes that this topic is important and needs to be addressed. Transparency and the criminal activity of soldiers acting on behalf of the United Nations are the main issues to be discussed.
Transparency in the United Nations’ process of procurement is a big issue that countries have with the United Nations. An open procurement process allows efficiency and can eliminate the threat of unfairness and corruption. India believes that strengthening the transparency in the United Nations’ procurement process will help change and make the views that countries have with the United Nations’ procurement more positive.
Illegal activity by the soldiers or peacekeepers working for the United Nations is another issue that causes countries to view the United Nations in a negative manner. India believes the United Nations needs to decide whether it is up to the country or the United Nations to discipline these soldiers. Abuse, rape, theft and murder are not crimes to be taken lightly and someone has to be held accountable for them. Right now the United Nations is taking the hit and India believes that the United Nations needs to discipline the soldiers so that they are not taking the heat any longer.
India has been a strong supporter of the United Nations since it has joined. We want other countries to view and support the United Nations as we do. Peace is our mission and the United Nations is going to be the organization to accomplish this mission.
