The delegation of New Zealand believes if genetically modified food is used, it must be determined by the FSANZ (Food Standards Australia New Zealand) as safe to consume. Assessments are performed on each genetic modification for its impact on food. The goals of the tests are to find any molecular, toxicological, nutritional and compositional differences in the food. New Zealand aims to produce a safe food supply that protects and supports the health of the Australian and New Zealand people.
Although genetically modified foods are beneficial, the citizens living within ones country have the right to know what they’re eating. The HSNO (Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act) protects the country of New Zealand “against biological contamination from genetically modified organisms”. GM foods are beneficial because the world’s population is increasing rapidly. GM foods are modified and basically injected with pesticides. The plants will require less water which will protect them from droughts. GMO have the potential to feed many starving people. Malnutrition affects more than half of the world’s population. Altering foods is a low-cost solution. Gm crops could decrease the cost of production and have very positive effects on the environment.
With the benefits come risks. Some factors need to be taken in to account in determining the necessity of the GM foods. Carcinogenicity, toxicity, and multi-generational outcomes are the three most important aspects to consider when determining the safety of GM foods.
