The Bahamas would like to recognize that piracy around the world is an issue. The United Nations has successfully been able to combat piracy in Somalia, however, Southeast Asia has seen piracy grow over the years. The Straits of Malacca are a hotbed for piracy which has become a global issue due to the amount of trading vessels that pass through the Straits. Many countries are not able to fight piracy currently, due to lack of materials, funding, or some other reason. It is vital that the world community works together to solve this issue because it affects world and regional trading.
The Bahamas has not had to deal with piracy like that of Somalia and the Straits of Malacca, but the Bahamas has had some isolated incidents of piracy involving drugs and robbery. The largest problem of piracy in the Bahamas is with drug trafficking. The Bahamas still has a large problem with drug trafficking, however, the issue is being resolved through a stronger police presence is the waters. Though, just the police presence is not enough, more equipment is needed to contain the problem.
The Bahamas believes that the best way of combating piracy is with a stronger presence of military in the troubled waters. Providing equipment to the countries in need is vital to stop the issue. There have also been treaties and pacts signed by countries in the same region to stop piracy that have been very effective. The United Kingdom has also helped patrol the waters of Somalia which has lowered the piracy rates. The Bahamas is open to hearing and helping with the many ways to contain and combat piracy around the globe.
