The delegation of China would like to release a bold statement in saying that China has, by far, the best strategy for development and regulation in regards to using international sports as a way to unify the world. As a country which will proudly host the 2022 Winter Olympics and having previously hosted the 2008 Summer Olympics both, respectively in Beijing, China believes it has had more recent experience and success in the field of organizing a safe and profitable large scale sporting event than most countries.
In 2008 China went to great lengths to ensure that the quality of the Summer Olympics was of the highest caliber and that the safety of those attending was not compromised. China’s overall budget for the event reached 40 billion dollars, all of which was delegated to specific areas for the development of the event. For example 1.1 million dollars was spent on reconstructing and improving transportation of citizens and foreign visitors, 200 million was spent on constructing an exceptionally beautiful and modern stadium, and most importantly the 3.6 billion devoted to technological advancements of the production and televising of the Olympic events, and in doing so, successfully turning Beijing into a “digital” city.
China believes that with an organized and specific budget, all non third world countries should be able, if willing, to host a major sporting event such as the Olympics without issue. This does not exclude third world countries, but does eliminate excuse for those countries which are not. The delegation of China would like also to suggest the creation of a UN body devoted to and which will oversee the spending and budget for the (event) country hosting the event.
Additionally China would like to bring attention to the positive and lasting effects of such games on the sense of nationalism within each country. Contrary to some countries such as the United States which in the past has provided harsh media coverage of PRC leaders during the 2008 Olympics, China is certain that International events have allowed the world to see how democratic, open, civilized, friendly, and harmonious it is not only with itself but with other countries as well.
In regards to media coverage of Major sports events, China has found great success in the censorship of media and internet access within the Country. China strongly believes that overall experience and safety of all countries involved with the games would be improved with the total elimination of negative media coverage of the games and the countries participating in and hosting the games. Events of negative media coverage through the most recent Olympics in Rio is an unfortunate example of what “media” can do when it is uncontrolled and unregulated, which can additionally “open the door” to racism, xenophobia, and violence.
More long lasting effects of the Olympics and such similar events include changes in the “hosting” countries governments and economies. China has seen an acceleration in its investment, idealism, and internationalism post Olympic games. For example China was extremely pleased that over 220 million Chinese citizens had access to regular internet and television during and after the Olympic games.
Likewise because of China's active participation in the Fédération Internationale de Football Association’s (FIFA) Women’s World Cup 2007, and the Guangzhou Asian Games in 2010, China's sports industry will grow by 20% a year, particularly in Beijing, Guangdong, Liaoning, and Zhejiang.
More specifically, along with the recent push of China’s sports sector, we have found success in reaching out to other countries through the game of football or “soccer". China has worked extensively to provide new football facilities and programs to cultivate our nation's finest football players. China recommends additionally along with all of it’s previous statements that we work with FIFA to further relations with Latin countries and others to hopefully work towards the development of their overall sense nationalism and economic success.
International sporting events provide an atmosphere that sometimes cannot be described as anything but the uniting of countries, which China devotedly supports. China looks forward to working with all UNDP delegations towards our common goal of unity.
