Algeria’s primary concern in the conflict between the Recent Republic of Korea and the DPRK is the issue of nuclear proliferation. In an age of growing nuclear parity, it is of critical importance that Algeria and the rest of the UN member countries prevent the further spread of nuclear weapons. This is not to disregard the legitimacy of nuclear power as a viable energy source for the future. However, it is problematic to allow a country to develop their nuclear power program, as this utilizes many of the same technologies as does making an atomic bomb. However, with the proper safeguards, Algeria believes that both of the concerned countries can develop a regimen of nuclear power, so long as it contains certain safeguards to prevent the further proliferation of nuclear weapons. It is Algeria’s position that any agreement that is reached between the concerned parties must contain reassurances relating to both nation’s nuclear programs.
In addition to Algeria’s concerns relating nuclear proliferation on the Korean peninsula, we also support multilateral talks between the concerned nations and the rest of the world, similar to the Six Party Talks that were held in October of this year. It is only through direct diplomacy that these regional conflicts can be resolved. However, our overarching goal throughout our foreign policy is to preserve peace throughout the world, and this is the sort of change we hope to effect in the world.
