“Iran on principle believes in a world free of nuclear weapons. Iran is hopeful that negotiations on North Korea’s nuclear activities can go ahead in the interest of both North Korea and the international community.” As this quotation by our Foreign Ministry Spokesman Mohammad Ali Hosseini clearly states, Iran does not support North Koreas growing number of nuclear weapons.
Although we do have some nuclear activity it is not in possessing nuclear weapons. The Islamic Republic of Iran has fully complied with the provisions of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty . We have voluntarily implemented the Additional Protocols, accepted inspections, and have taken measures beyond the requirements of the Additional Protocols. We have done this specifically for the sake of removing misunderstandings about whether or not we have nuclear weapons.
We are very pleased with the outcome of the recent Second Korean Summit. We are happy to hear that both North and South Korea are interested in discussing an official end to the Korean War. From these talks we understand that the Democratic People's Republic of Korea agreed to shut down the Yongbyon nuclear complex by the end of 2007 and provide a full account of its nuclear arms in exchange for a variety of concessions on the part of the United States of America, including being dropped from the US list of state sponsors of terrorism and a large amount of foreign aid.
It is great to see the progress being made in the compromise between North and South Korea. We support the changes being made to North Korea’s nuclear programs and the peaceful settlement of the Korean Peninsula’s issues.
