Though the Kingdom of the Netherlands faces less danger of large-scale aggression against the territory of the Netherlands and its allies, our nation also faces threats that are less predictable, such as international terrorism and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.The Kingdom of the Netherlands believes that Asia is an indispensable partner in the struggle against the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. The conflicts on the Korean peninsula do have the potential to become nuclear conflicts. Therefore, our nation realizes the importance of a healthy relationship between South Korea and North Korea, along with the rest of the international community.
In 2001, The Netherlands established diplomatic relations with DPRK. This contributed to, as South Korea’s Foreign Affairs and Trade Ministry put it, “The enhancement of peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula through ongoing reconciliation and cooperation between South and North Korea.'' The Netherlands feels that North and South Korea’s reconciliation and the official ending of the Korean War will be the product of DPRK dismantling their nuclear weapons program. Our nation entirely supports the Six Party Talks and considers the shut down of the Yongbyon nuclear complex a great relief and step forward towards this goal. Moreover, China's important role in the six-party talks over the Korean crisis deserves the EU's respect and political support. Likewise, the campaign against terrorism cannot be fought successfully without cooperation between the EU and Asian countries. Keeping the fact that far-off regional conflicts can also effect our own security, especially those related to nuclear weapons, The Netherlands embraces the idea of the EU being more involved in discussions regarding non-proliferation and looks forward to discussing with other nations at this upcoming conference to attain a sturdy solution that will ensure a healthy relationship between North and South Korea along with the rest of the international community.
