With the current growth of democracies throughout the world, it is important that political transitions go as smoothly as possible. However for some countries, this is easier said than done. Many times, with the election of a new leader, there are challenges that must be overcome. These challenges usually involve two kinds of issues. The first one is that the outcome of the vote is disputed. The second is the existing leader refuses to step down. When these challenges come up, most countries don’t know how to resolve them. It is then that a country’s stature may fall because they become unstable due to internal power struggles.
Ecuador had to travel a bumpy road to democracy in 1979. They now think it is important to support promoting peaceful post election transitions. It is also important to prevent any violence that may be caused due to post election transitions. Ecuador believes that the United Nations should step and provide aid in order to help nations struggling with these transitions. Unbiased observers should be sent in to oversee elections to make elections fair. Hopefully nations such as Kenya and Zimbabwe will be able to achieve peace within their politics and in the future have smooth paths in post election transitions.
Any country that believes in that fact that peaceful post-election transitions are vital to any nation stature should support Ecuador’s position and the need to have United Nation aid to achieve the peace. It is important in a democracy that the people get what they believe is right.
