Indonesia sees sustainable industry in the developing world as a necessity. Arief Wicaksono, of Indonesia, serves as the political advisor of Southeast Asia Greenpeace, an organization bent on perpetuating attention to the world's environmental troubles and finding solutions. SEAsia Greenpeace has been working to encourage the sustainable growth of the palm oil industry in Indonesia, and Wicaksono has said "We are not against industries, but they need to understand the need for the most appropriate management of the environment so that industries could continue operating safely, without harming the environment." Wicaksono also believes that the expansion of land for the cultivation of oil palm should be halted temporarily to allow and encourage the operations to continue safely.
The Ministry of Industry of the Republic of Indonesia met on the seventh of November, 2007, and discussed “Responsible Care Supporting Chemical Industry to Sustainable Growth.” Indonesia has implemented “Responsible Care,” defined as “a voluntary responsibility of the global chemical industry by giving proof to public about the continuous effort to maintain and improve the rules of health, safety and environment in entire activities.”
Developing countries must consider sustainable industries, for it will allow them to compete globally and while advocating worldwide environmental awareness. More specifically, there must be better governing of industries in developing countries, to prevent the taking for granted of natural resources. Global standards should be established, and a different incentive if any should be offered rather than the compensation per ton of CO2 emissions decreased, as established by the Kyoto Protocol.
