In Somalia, were most of their industry is rural-based and agricultural dependent, creating a sustainable industry that will take Somalia into the next century will be a difficult task. Somalia's industry is now based of livestock and coal, but needs to change in order to make Somalia's government stronger.
In 2004, more than 300 million people were living on less than a dollar a day in the Sub-Sahara of Africa. That's 41%. This is partly because of widespread pandemic such as HIV and Malaria and conflicts between countries, also because of environmental threats, such as deforestation and climate change.
Somalia thinks that we should join NEPAD in order to help eradicate the sustainable development in Somalia. The New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD), which was launched by many African heads of state in 2001. This organization was formed to help stop poverty, speak for the minorities in Africa, and to put African countries on the road to sustainable growth. Going green is something Somalia is thinking about looking into. Some of the things we are looking into are to increase recycling and prevent wastes of industrial generation and stop wasting water.
The piracy on the coast of Somalia is a pressing issue to the trade industry. This is making trade nearly impossible. There are only three countries that Somalia is currently trading with. NATO is currently sending out ships to escort food ships so the pirates so not attack the ships. Somalia asks that other developed countries step in and help us out to fight off the pirates so Somalia can sustain its self and eventually trade with neighboring countries with items such as bananas and fish once the pirates are taken care of. This is an issue that will soon turn into an epidemic if no one does anything.
Transportation is an issue that we need to look into. There are no railways and airplanes are only used by drug smugglers. If we build more roads and railways, trading will become easier and we will not have to worry about pirates taking over our ships. This will provide a better way to make Somalia more industrial and get the people more jobs, therefore more money will made available to poor individuals. By doing these few things, industrializing Somalia will be a great success.
