The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has been on a fragile state for years, and it only worsens everyday with the myriad of rebel groups that destroy the land. DRC has the highest morality rates in the world, with 1200 people dying everyday and many of them being children; this is worst conflict since WWII. Of the 5.4 million died, 3.5 is contributed to the Uganda and Rwanda occupation in the DRC. The DRC is not happy with the Rwanda, Uganda, and Burundian forces that are still present, and hopes that this body can come to a conclusion for their removal. The internal problems that the aforementioned countries are facing are theirs, and for Congo to be used as a bloody battlefield for their purposes is simply unacceptable. Occupying Congo will not solve their problems, solutions must be found in their respective countries. The National Congress for the People’s Defense, or CNDP led by Laurent Nkunda has done nothing but bring harm to the people of Congo, recruiting child soldiers, taking over villages, raping girls (sometimes as young as 4), and taking the minerals of Congo for their own use.
The DRC supports MONUC, but wishes them to take more effective measures when dealing with rebel groups. MONUC is the United Nations most expensive mission ever, and MONUC recently was not even able to stop Nkunda forces from coming through the gates of Goma. DRC commends the efforts by UNICEF, and various NGOs that have helped the Congolese people to make their life slightly bearable.
The body of GLIMUN must be cognizant of the fact that throwing troops into Congo sporadically, dancing around the topic, and asking for unrealistic solutions must not be tolerated. As a professional committee, we can all agree that the main goal is to bring peace to Congo, and with this in mind, the DRC is extremely pleased. The DRC looks forward to meeting the delegates of Special Political to make the most effective and realistic resolution as possible.
