The constant turmoil through out the region the Democratic Republic of the Congo and its neighboring countries is a matter in which the Republic of India has had a continuous effort in attempting to bring peace to the region. The ethnic based conflict has had an intricate history of innumerable death tolls and humanitarian crisis’, which this committee needs to address.
The Democratic Republic of the Congo in correlation with the body of the United Nations has been working diligently towards a hopeful end to the conflict. The creation of the peacekeeping mission MONUC in 1999 has shown an international concern for the welfare of the citizens of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. As recently as 2008 peace agreements have been made, as well as rebel leaders in the Democratic Republic of the Congo have made statements of respecting and supporting a ceasefire.
The Republic of India is a chief advocate of peacekeeping, as well as upholding the virtues of human rights. When looking at the situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, India’s involvement in the ending of the conflict is apparent, with the sending of peacekeeping troops as well as police personnel to the peacekeeping mission of MONUC. Our position of Police Commissioner in MONUC mission shows our steady involvement and continuous efforts to bring peace to the region. The Republic of India firmly believes the efforts of MONUC along with the 2008 Goma peace accords cease fire agreement need to continuously be a part of stabilization attempts in the area. The Democratic Republic of the Congo’s transitionally elected President Joseph Kablia needs to continue to be recognized with legitimacy through out the region.
Peace talks and ceasefires between competing rebel groups as well as government armies on all sides need to occur to help ensure the creation of a peaceful state of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The continuing of peacekeeping forces in the nation are necessary for stability at this time, of which the Republic of India will continue to advocate and contribute to. Humanitarian aid is a fundamental in assisting the Democratic Republic of the Congo, but the Republic of India feels aid from various nations and NGOs should be delivered and consumed with some sort of transparency if not already occurring.
The Republic of India sees the issues of stabilization of the area, reconciliation of ethnic groups, delivering of aid, and secured peace for the betterment of the Democratic Republic of the Congo as the goals of this body.
