As of gaining independence from Belgium in 1960, the Democratic Republic of Congo has been in a continuous state of suffering from a large scale of issues that have been ongoing up to this day. As of gaining independence, the Democratic Republic of Congo has failed to establish a reliable and stable government due to civil war, violence, and corruption since declaring independence. The Lusaka Cease fire act of 1999 showed potential and provided hope among the Congolese government and people. However, This agreement seemed to only take effect for a short period of time. Rapidly resolutions declined to increasing violent structures of reform resulting from a rising political group. Due to the causing an inability to hold the 2007 elections. The Democratic Republic of Congo continues to remain in a complete state of instability containing revolt and corruption.
Portugal, while not directly involved in this particular situation , We strongly and fully support NATO's ideology and views in these affairs. Portugal would like to see the direction of the Democratic Republic of Congo turn into a more goal oriented and swift recovery.
Portugal Feels that peace is of the up most importance, while the first thing kept on mind is the safety of the Congolese people. We first and foremost would like to stabilize the situation. Although the Democratic Republic of Congo has endured many complex situations for numerous years, Portugal continues to believe that there is still much hope for the future of the DRC.
We also feel that support of a peacekeeping force would further help contain ethnic violence. Thus, Portugal supports an an inclusive peace process in which all ethnicity's are included in the current decisions of the situation. Portugal would like to see a discontinuance of unnecessary bloodshed and violence , and hopes to find a solution to restore peace among the Democratic Republic of Congo.
