There is a terrible act being committed against humanity in the Republic of Congo, and has been affecting the region for some amount of time. Over the past ten years, approximately 5.4 million people. Because of this mass of unnecessary deaths, the UN authorized the creation of a peace keeping mission to keep the violence from escalating any further, and to attempt to cease the killing of the hundreds of people who die every day. This is the second of such wars in the region with thousands of refugees remaining from the first war in the region. Recently another situation has elevated in the region around Goma. This recent violence is between the Rwandan government and Congolese rebels. These and other reoccurring events and racial and ethnic situations have plagued and brought suffering to thousands of people in the regions over the past few decades even with attempts to end the conflicts. People are not only dying directly from violence, but also by many causes created by the violence or influence of violence. These include famine, disease, and extreme poverty.
Saudi Arabia wishes to remain a neutral country in the issue. We do not want to make any important decisions that will affect the outcome of the issue in a way another country feels unfit. We would like to lend support, but don’t necessarily see ourselves making decisions on behalf of any other nations. We would like to see a solution soon, preferably one reached by discussion, although we would like the countries that take the responsibility to make changes do so until the situation is resolved. We would also like to see that the proposed resolution would be of benefit to the refugees in the surrounding areas. We would like to see a variety of countries give their input, not just the countries directly involved.
Most of the countries that wish to see a timely end to the crisis will most likely agree with Saudi Arabia. We would not like to choose any specific sides on the issue of the wars going on in the area, although we would like to agree with those who would like to see it end.
The Lusaka Ceasefire Agreement in July 1999, singed by the five regional states, was designed to maintain healthy relationships between the involved countries. The Political Council for Justice and Peace requested that the parties involved were to come to agreement on a peaceful conclusion on November 4, 2008.
