Unfortunately, many countries experience ethnic conflicts within their regions. Although it may be difficult to change people’s thoughts on different ethnicity, it is important that something must be done when conflict breaks out. Once conflict in a region begins, the United Nations can give ethnic minorities that might otherwise lack a voice resources to more effectively engage with their governments.
Ecuador believes that all countries should first be given an opportunity to settle ethnic conflicts or disputes for themselves. If they cannot do this within a reasonable time period, the United Nations should then be given the right to step in to fairly solve the conflict. In order to provide the country with a suitable time table to solve the conflict, there must be a discussion. Those who are chosen to provide aid should be unbiased in order to have a fair resolution to the conflict.
It is the duty of the United Nations to assist in resolving conflict in nations that are faced with certain ethnic groups discriminating or threatening other groups. Countries that might oppose Ecuador’s position are those who believe that is up to only the country that is having the conflict to solve it. Those that support it should consider what the United Nations should do when it decides to be apart of the resolution. It is important that any resolution to a conflict is fair to both sides or else more conflict could be created in the future.
