Poland believes that the illegal sale of small arms is an international issue. The illegal sale of small arms causes about 1,000 deaths every day. We believe that illegal small arms are a major cause of many crimes committed around the world. Poland is specifically interested in stemming the illegal sale of small arms in the Balkan states. Poland hopes to create an international agreement to help stem the use and sale of illegal small arms.
Poland is involved in many international initiatives that focus on small arms at the United Nations, the Organization of Security and Cooperation in Europe, and the Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council. We hope to focus on the storage, confiscation, destruction, and reintegration of firearms.
Poland feels that the illicit trade in small arms usually stems from the legal sale and production of small firearms. Poland firmly believes that patrolling a countries borders and internal policing are great ways to reduce the illegal sale of firearms. Poland also hopes to make an international agreement that will regulate the process and procedure of storage, confiscation, and destruction of illegal firearms. Poland also believes that an international network of international contact points and officers to be set up to help regulate trade in small arms. This would assist countries that are having difficulty policing their borders and police their internal trade. Finally, Poland believes that there should be a national agreement that would restrict the sale of certain small arms due to their potency when used by a non-military threat. This would also help created better communications and relations between the different countries that have accepted the agreement.
