The Islamic Republic of Pakistan is greatly troubled by North Korea’s acquisition of nuclear weapons and long-range missiles and their irresponsibility in testing these weapons. North Korea has not shown the world that they can use nuclear technology responsibly. North Korea has banished International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspectors from their nuclear facilities and has refused to submit information about their facilities to the international community. Accordingly, we are sincerely concerned about North Korea’s potentially militant intentions. North Korea has shown its inability to conform to international standards not only in its attempts to forge suspect alliances but also in its complete disregard for international law with the production of weapons of mass destruction.
Born out of our concerns for the situation in North Korea, we have chosen a few particular actions that we would like to see accomplished in this summit and over the course of several years. We encourage North Korea to allow the IAEA full access to their nuclear plants and to be forthcoming with the international community about their peaceful nuclear intentions. We would also like to see North Korea return to the six-party talks between the United States of America, South Korea, North Korea, Russia, China, and Japan. Another problem that plagues the Korean Peninsula that we would like to see resolved is the lack of concern the North Korean government has shown over human rights violations and the humanitarian crisis within the DPRK. Pakistan would also like to see international unity in opposition to North Korea’s belligerence as a united front is an integral component of effective response. We are hopeful that our impending summit will bring positive change to the situation in the Korean Peninsula.
