The situation in the Korean peninsula has caused several severe problems for the people of Korea. Recent missile launches have increased tension in the area substantially , and economic sanctions have lead to a crippling of infrastructure in North Korea. The delegation of Syria firmly believes that the only solution to the situation in the Korean peninsula is a removal of sanctions and a total restart of diplomatic processes leading up to a firm solution with regards to the either re-unification of the peninsula or far more stable and permanent relations between the two states. The government of Syria feels, however, that forcing the issue by way of sanction or otherwise giving significant roles in the mediation of said solution to nations that are not intimately involved with the Korean problem infringes on the rights of both North and South Korea to have full control over their own relations with other countries.
Syria does feel that the United Nations has a role to play with regards to this situation, however, it thinks that the role of the United Nations is not to be a arbiter of this agreement, but rather to represent the case of the Korean people as a whole and advocate for the solution that would assist them the most. Syria also feels that regardless of the United Nations' stance on the result of the negotiations conducted by the relevant states, it is the duty of the United Nations to provide as much assistance as is requested by those governments so as to assist in the success of the diplomatic agreement and the well being of the Korean people.
In conclusion, Syria believes that the United Nations does have a duty to the Korean people to ensure that the situation on the peninsula is resolved peacefully- however, it must remember that it has no right to interfere with internal Korean politics and that its duties lie with the Korean people and to no other groups.
