Vietnam strongly believes that the state of North Korea and its government is affecting the world recently more than ever. Kim Jung Il has named his own son as his successor, which could easily lead to many troubles in the future. He has proved to be very unpredictable in the past, and his son could prove to be even more dangerous. Also the possible secretive development of nuclear weapons proves to be a very dangerous threat not only to world powers but to nearby countries such as Vietnam. Domestically, the human rights of North Korea’s citizens are in a horrendous state. Vietnam believes that change in North Korea must take place soon, but it must not be done in a hasty manner. As a country who has developed into a market economy, while remaining communistic, Vietnam has proved that it is possible to have a communist government and to have a more open society. Our country is very concerned about the condition of North Korea and hopes that it will learn from our previous example.
Vietnam suggests that something immediately be done affecting the long suffering citizens of North Korea, but not in a way that will upset or offend Kim Jung Il. As a former enemy of the U.S. and other democratic nations, we feel that we as a fellow communist nation somewhat know the situation that is going on in North Korea and what it could become if it were to make some changes. It is key that a resolution is not made against Kim Jung Il, but it is made with Kim Jung Il.The U.N. should make a strong effort to find out more about North Korea domestically and to find out more about the rumored development of nuclear weapons. On an even larger note, the people of North Korea need aid and support with the help of nearby countries. If the communist leaders of North Korea saw this support, they may be more open to the rest of the world in the future. The secrecy must be stopped, and North Korea must feel that it has an ally in the U.N. if it is willing to reform in a peaceful way. Vietnam is a peaceful nation and believes that it is crucial that a violent approach to this situation is not carried out and that progress is made in the most respectful way possible.
