The Republic of Turkey sits on one of the main drug routes used to traffic drugs from Asia to Europe and vice-versa. Turkey is doing everything in its power to try and stop these drugs from moving across Turkey and into other nations. Although Turkey has large drug trafficking problems, we do not have immense drug abuse issues. However with drug trade has come increasing drug violence as traffickers use more lethal weapons and force to achieve their goals.
With the hope of joining the European Union, Turkey has drafted more effective legislation concerning drugs and improving our police force to better handle the situation within our own borders. Turkey will also need the help of the international community. Turkey is but one of the many countries that the drugs are trafficked through between Asia and Europe. Turkey has already worked with EU, US, and Afghan officials to train our police forces to better combat the drug trade. The ameliorating effects can already be seen. Arrests of drug traffickers are steadily increasing in Turkey.
Turkey believes that drug producing nations of the world need to crack down on border security. If fewer drugs make it out of drug producing countries and more are seized at the borders, few drugs will get out into circulation. Turkey understands that this is no easy task. It takes time, money, and manpower to accomplish this difficult task. We encourage nations from all around the world to come together to train their police forces on combating the drug trade.
Turkey believes that all nations should uphold the three conventions on illicit drug trade. The third convention really focuses on working together, an opinion that Turkey shares. In order to combat the drug trade we will need to work together. Turkey is willing to work with all nations to implement resolutions that will help the international community more effectively deal with drug trade and the accompanying violence.
