The UN’s mission is one that is committed to protecting the rights and welfare of all people. With that in mind, the Republic of Turkey has sought to confront the most pressing issues of our time.
When the UN rewarded Turkey’s growing regional and global influence with a non-permanent membership to the Security Council in 2008, we seized the opportunity. We have since attempted to address terrorism, the nuclear situation in Iran, and other issues with sensitivity, insight, and determination. Earlier this year, we chaired the Council on Diplomatic Strategies to Combat Terrorism.
As a nation that is uniquely situated between Europe and the Near East, counter-terrorism is our first priority. Our goal to significantly reduce global terrorism will not be fulfilled until every group that promotes terrorism, regardless of religious or political affiliation, ceases to exist. This is an issue that demands international cooperation and engagement.
Accordingly, we strive, with all of our efforts, to deter proliferation of weapons of mass destruction (WMDs) both regionally and globally. All member states, including nuclear states, must hold a policy of non-proliferation. We have fought for, and continue to suggest, the creation of a "Weapons of Mass Destruction Free Zone in the Middle East," as called for by UNSC Resolution 687. We understand that this is a nuanced issue, and that not every country should face the same consequences for defensive action, but this body must uphold certain standards, including, but not limited to, non-proliferation.
Ultimately, Turkey cannot appropriately over-emphasize the importance of multilateral diplomacy. We cannot make progress on these issues, which must be solved in the interest of international security, without the cooperation and active involvement of the international community.
