The Cold War established the need for space programs to become a major power in the world. The former Soviet Union, the United States, and modern Russia have established this idea. The use of spy satellites and other such militaristic use of space will eventually lead to actual weapons in space. China has already demonstrated its ability to shoot satellites out of the sky and it is highly likely that other countries are either developing similar tech or are already capable of doing the same. If this line of thought is continued, then there is no doubt that space will become a place of open warfare.
Libya, as a part of Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS), believes that space should be preserved as a arms-free zone and not become the next site for an arms race. To that end, Libya would support any resolution that would encourage peaceful use of space and allow our country to access it. Libya would like to keep space from being dominated by the world’s largest powers. Space should be shared by the whole Earth, not just those who can afford to buy the real estate. The Antarctic Treaty is an excellent example of what Libya desires in space. The Treaty maintains that Antarctica is to be solely dedicated to research and to other such peaceful intentions. It also requires that the signers of the treaty must report exactly what they are doing in the Antarctic. Libya hopes that the other nations will join with us and preserve space for all nations.
