The nation of Maldives considers rising ocean levels to be a major threat, because it is an nation made up of islands in the Indian Ocean, and its primary economic activity is tourism. With the highest elevation at 2.4m above sea level it requests immediate action to be taken by the UN.
The action that Maldives would like taken is a stronger agreement from nations such as the United States, and other industrialized nations to help combat the growing number of pollutants going into the atmosphere. With an increasing number of third and second world countries becoming industrialized, Maldives would like a fund set up to help any refugees fleeing from nations facing total territory loss due to the rising levels of the oceans. Maldives would also like there to be land set aside for countries who are facing total territory loss in lands where their is ample room for the flooded nation to peacefully co-exist with the existing nation.
Maldives would also like preventative measures taken to help contain the rising sea levels from the land. This could be done by using money from a fund set up to build dams, floodgates, and dikes in order to help protect the land from flooding, and to allow more time for nations to react to the rising sea levels.
Maldives would also like nations to keep in mind that this is an issue that is affecting many people around the world today, while Maldives has not begun evacuations, the nation of Tuvalu has begun with the assistance of New Zealand.
