The Plurinantional State of Bolivia believes in the pursuit of equality between the sexes. A vital component of making this a reality is equal opportunity education. By instilling equality as a social value in our youth and ensuring both genders have access to the same educational opportunities, Bolivia believes we can create a more just society for both men and women.
Since 1994, with the passage of Education Reform Law 1565, Bolivia has been addressing gender equality in education within our own borders. Bolivia has been focusing on primary and preschool education to begin with, as we recognize that rewriting social values is a steady and measured process. We believe that if we are able to instill the idea of gender equality in our youth, this will, in years to come, help create a wave of change throughout our entire society.
More specifically, Bolivia has been integrating gender equality throughout our curricula. This includes everything from teachers actively creating an equal social environment within their classrooms and challenging sexist beliefs as they come up, to including women’s issues in health classes and teaching about significant women in history. We have also worked to equalize participation in activities that have traditionally been done by one gender or the other, such as home economics and sports.
Bolivia sees equal access to education for women as a vital part of reaching the UN’s Millennium Development Goals. Because of the far-reaching effects of ensuring equal opportunities in education for women, Bolivia believes that the UNW should make a strong effort to help make equality in education a reality throughout the world.
