The illegal trade and traffic of small arms is a serious problem for all nations. We have put many restraints on small arms, such as making automatic weapons illegal, and a citizen cannot get a weapon without a proper license In many nations especially around Nigeria conflicts are between independent groups and government. These independent groups obtain their fire arms through illegal trade. With these illegal trade there are many problems that arise and keeping tabs on fire arms is increasingly difficult. Without further regulations and harsher punishments these illegal trades would become more harmful.
The best way to combat the illicit trade of fire of small arms it to tighten the noose on those who let it continue and feed further into the problem. Nigeria believes that further restraint on arms as a global issue isn't necessary. There is no reason for independent states to try to help each other, this would only further the tensions between each state because of unnecessary involvement in other independent states. Nigeria does not have the large problem with illicit firearms like other neighboring countries, so there is no reason for other countries to take focus off their problems to help where its not needed. Also as Nigeria we don't want or need to take focus on other problems that we have to help other states with their own internal problem.
We believe that the United Nations need to have countries further track their imports and exports of fire arms. However we do have the belief that each nation should be as autonomous as possible so these tracking regulations should merely be a suggestion. With these changes Nigeria believe every nation can stop their illegal trade of firearms like Nigeria.
