In Jamaica there is many problems that face the country and one of them is child marriage. Most of the child marriages occurring within our country are in the rural areas in our country and most of the time they happen is because the girls are of a poor economic background, they may have low self esteem, or they may have not of had a strong father figure in their lives. Most of it also is that they are not legal marriages; they are common law unions. Most of the girls that are in one of these common law unions are between the ages of 15-18 and most of the men that they are with are men that are up to 10 years older than them. Even thought this a problem it is only within 9% of girls within the country so it doesn’t make it a very high priority on our list of things to try and fix since our main problem with our country is our economics, so to take time from trying to fix our money problems to stopping child marriage, which does not affect a lot of our people wouldn’t make much sense. With the country doing other things to make itself better, the girls getting married off fall by the wayside and even though we can’t put tons of effort into making it stop, we do want to try and put an end to it before it gets worst. We as a nation would hope that the United Nations can come up with some ideas that can help us to fight this problem and try to stop it from happening ever again in our country.
