The nation of Japan is a prominent member of the UN's peacekeeping missions and strives to uphold UN's policy of peace and security in all its operations, including conflict resolution. It maintains policies similar to its close alley, the United States. In previous years, Japan has been a part of the UN's peacekeeping operations sending troops to East Timor, Cambodia, and Mozambique. Japan has also sent troops to Iraq in 2004, for the purpose of providing humanitarian aid and helping in reconstruction. As Prime Minister Fukuda stated in his policy speech: "Japan aspires to become a hub of human resource development as well as for research and intellectual contribution to further promote cooperation in the field of peace-building."
Since Japan is also a member of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), it is committed to upholding human rights and freedoms wherever they are threatened. The OSCE functions to diminish conflicts and help create settlements to keep political disputes from arising again. They also offer aid and supplies to post-conflict areas, in order to help with rehabilitation. Also, they help facilitate dialogue in political or regional disputes.
One of the largest ongoing issues today concerns the Palestine-Israeli conflict, for which Japan has funded money and offered full support to creating two-separate states and promoting stability in the region. Japan believes that sometimes third-party intervention is necessary to promote peace in such situations. The Japanese Government has developed a plan for peace, dubbed Corridor for Peace and Prosperity in order to get both sides to focus on economic development that is mutually beneficial instead of continuously fighting over land. Japan has also offered support for regular meetings between the two parties to help them work towards peace. Japan aids in Palestinian youth educational and supplying medical aid to refugees, in the hopes that it will aid with stability.
Some of the things Japan has done for political conflict resolution includes supplying aid by means of medical supplies and education, sending troops for the purpose of reconstruction, facilitating meetings between political or regional groups to help diminish conflicts, and encouraging economic ties and development.
