The United Nations was created to solve global issues and keep the peace worldwide. Unfortunately, we are not always able to do this effectively. At times we are too indecisive, while at other times we are too forceful and pushy. We must work to find equilibrium and make our conflict resolution methods as effective as possible.
Switzerland only recently joined the United Nations and we have continued our tradition of neutrality. We continue to preach ‘active neutrality,’ which means that we will be willing to negotiate, offer guidance, and help those in need in any ways possible.
Switzerland would like to see some key points enforced to help improve the United Nation’s conflict resolution mechanisms. We would like to stress power sharing, specifically on giving each country an equal say regardless of economic prowess. We would like to focus on the protection and advancement of human rights, because doing so will lead to morally sound decisions. Another international focus of ours is on combating landmines and the illegal small arms trade. We would like to emphasize working with individual conflict regions to solve the world’s largest problems. We believe in collaborating with NGOs that will work diligently to enforce our solutions. And we would like to see a strengthening of strategic partnerships both in and outside the United Nations.
Countries who do not wish to radically or violently impose their personal values and beliefs on others will surely side with us. We believe in equal rights for all countries, even those that might be small and poor. We also believe in staying neutral on conflicts we have no right to be involved in.
Large powerhouse countries might like to limit some of our efforts. Many countries such as the United States believe that they should have more influence on the United Nations than countries that are smaller than them. They also like to bully other countries into agreeing with issues they believe strongly in.
