Drug trafficking not only spreads harmful substances around the globe but also promotes other heinous acts such as sex trafficking and violent organized crime. Thus, quelling the illicit drug trade is of utmost importance to Italy.
As a nation who has struggled with organized crime in the past, Italy is especially concerned about the illegal mobs associated with the drug trade. Currently, Italy's Bureau of Organized Crime has a strong system to track drug trafficking and the organized crime that goes along with it. This system involves specialized justice systems and police, undercover agents, wiretaps, and monitored deliveries. One feature of our system us the use of seized assets. Once assets are seized from organized crime groups, they are distributed to government programs and non-profit organizations. Thus, drug trafficking groups are financially weakened while the people of Italy benefit. Italy has also been active in helping reduce the drug trafficking problem in other parts of the world as well, helping train police officers in Central America.
Italy supports strong global tactics to help reduce drug trafficking. Even if each country is well equipped to reduce the drug trade, trafficking spreads across borders, and thus cooperation between nations is needed to be truly effective. Italy believes that producers, traffickers, and users should be held accountable. As for possible tactics, Italy recommends developing training programs to ensure that each interested nation has a strong police force specially trained to combat those involved with drug trafficking. With each nation following similar guidelines and using similar techniques, we can better work together to reduce the illicit drug trade.
