Immigrant rights are an important issue in today’s global community. Seeing as immigrants provide valuable contributions to the global community, it’s especially important that their rights be improved and protected. Cameroon hopes that the member nations will strongly consider taking action to improve immigrant rights.
Cameroon has a vested interest in the rights of immigrants around the world, because Cameroon attracts a lot of immigrants from other African nations due to our relative political stability and good economy as compared to other African nations. These immigrants comprise large portions of our workforce and contribute to our economy, so it is of utmost importance that their rights are improved and protected. Far too often immigrants are forced to live as second class citizens; being paid a fraction of the wages citizens make, being abused by people in positions of power, and being discriminated against in everyday life. Citizens often do not have to deal with any of this.
For these reasons, Cameroon proposes that fellow UN member nations adopt laws allowing immigrants in their country to apply for citizenship after spending one year as a resident of the country. We believe that the most effective way to fix the gulf in rights between immigrants and citizens would be to make it easier for immigrants to acquire citizenship, thereby eliminating the unjust treatment they may have received in the past. In addition to this, Cameroon also supports the overall improvement of immigrants’ rights, including more heavily enforced anti-discrimination laws and putting measures in place to stop police abuse of immigrants for good.
