We, as an international community, have stepped onto the doorstep of a new era. We have been walking closer and closer to this threshold of change over the past decade and it is finally upon us. The words of Winston Churchill reflect the global ramifications of an event such as this by stating “it is not the end. Nor is it the beginning but it is, perhaps, the end to the beginning!” The dawn of the cyber realm has passed and now the international community must cope with the effects of rapid globalization and the dangerous capacity of this new technological world.
Certain western imperialists have already shown interest in the technological facets of the Middle East and Arab region. Cyber-attacks have the ability to target an entire population at the click of a button. National governments can be targeted through virus attacks, power grid shutdowns, and even the hijacking of specialized military equipment. Unfortunately, past events have shown that some of these sophisticated, yet ironically juvenile, attacks are not beneath the high and mighty patriotic attitudes of technologically advanced global hegemonies.
It is our role, as an UN-sanctioned committee, to halt these manipulative attacks. Among many other nations, the Syrian Arab Republic expresses concern over any possible impending militarized internet strikes. Therefore, Bashar Al-Assad and the people of Syria would strongly support any resolution that disavows the neocolonialist efforts of countries taking technical advantage of other nations as well as reviewing their militant agendas.
