Latin is a well-known dead language. People still study it and use it to learn about events in the past. There are many dead and almost extinct languages that are not so lucky. All endangered languages have the same importance as the language of Latin and will be extinct soon if countries do not stand up for their languages. Countries need to know the importance of languages before most are extinct.
As a committee we must realize the importance of these languages and the advantages they all have. We must look at the source of the problem before we may look at solutions. Why are these languages becoming endangered? Are we documenting them as well as we are able to? How can we make data collecting easier? Efforts previously done have not helped lower the rate at which languages are decreasing. What is not working in the system currently in place to reverse these trends? We must address these questions and more.
The Federated States of Micronesia would like to see a resolution that addresses all these questions and adequately documents and preserves endangered languages. As a country with 13 languages and most of them are severely endangered we understand the importance of preservation of these endangered languages.
Communication is very important aspect of life today and will continue to be very important. Language is a key part of communicating so we must preserve these languages that are in danger.
