The nation of Canada believes that a large focus of the United Nations should be to meet the deadline of the eight Millennium Development Goals. The eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) range from halving extreme poverty rates to halting the spread of HIV/AIDS and providing universal primary education, all by the target date of 2015. These eight goals are very important issues that have large effects in the world, and if we put a majority of our focus and power into reaching these or even making large amounts of progress towards these goals, we could begin to eliminate many large issues that are troubling the nations of this world.
Many smaller countries that are dealing with these issues within their own borders are not in the financial position to be able to fix these problems on their own, but if the United Nations as a whole were to set these eight Millennium Development Goals as their primary focus we could have the resources to make a lot of progress towards or even eliminate several very important pressing issues that are troubling the world to this day.
Since the United Nations has the potential money and power to put towards the achieving of these eight goals, Canada believes that the United Nations should make their primary focuses eradicating extreme poverty and hunger, achieving universal primary education, promoting gender equality and empowering women, reducing child mortality, improving maternal health, combating HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases, ensuring environmental sustainability, and developing a global partnership for development
