The MDG’s, or Millenium Development Goals, are goals set by the UN that encompass a wide range of increasingly important issues. They span from ending world hunger, to better education, to gender equality. Overall there is 8 and up to 2 effect Cuba. This is a wake up call for the country and shows the necessity to face their problems. These problems may be world wide but all it takes is one country to solve them before the rest of the world can follow in their lead.
Cuba, specifically, is under duress from environmental stability and global partnership for development. Environmental stability is very important to Cuba. Being in the Caribbean, it is a tropical island by default. However, after years of overuse and bad treatment the environment is on the decline. Desertification as a result of deforestation and soil degradation are the main issues, but pollution of both the air and water are also contributing factors. Cuba is facing serious future problems and needs to change its ways before it’s too late. Global partnership may also pose a problem for Cuba in the future. Headed by the Communist party, Cuba is not a favorable option for interaction for much of the world. Countries like the U.S. may see them as a risk, as well as a liability when dealing with world affairs. In the future, Cuba must change its ways as the rest of the world is to combat the MDG’s effectively and efficiently.
In terms of solutions, there are many facing Cuba. To deal with the environmental issues, Cuba can find greener ways to produce items, as well as find better ways to dispose of waste. They can also look into other ways of getting materials such as wood which could cut down on deforestation and desertification. Dealing with global partnerships, can also be managed by Cuba. Although they are a Communist state, the country can follow in China’s lead to become a world superpower. Cuba may not have the size or resources China does, but they do have a determined government and loyal population that would be willing to do what it takes to improve their country. Overall, the MDG’s created by the UN can be accomplished and Cuba is just one piece to the puzzle.
