Global climate change has affected many countries by causing rising water levels, destruction of forests, irregular weather patterns and other problems. An addition to the UNFCCC called the Kyoto Protocol was proposed to require a limit on greenhouse gases emitted in the nations of the UN, which could help slow or stop these problems. The problem is that some other countries have no reason to do so. There is also lack of hard evidence that climate change is the cause of these problems. Regardless, there is evidence that the climate is changing significantly.
The delegation of Nigeria believes that the issue of global climate change is a relevant and serious one. Our nation is already experiencing problems such as unusual rain patterns, droughts, and flooding. Flooding has damaged many homes, establishments, and natural landscapes. It is an immediate concern and has been extremely costly; almost 600,000 houses have been damaged in some way by flooding. It is for these reasons that this consequence should be addressed immediately.
Nigeria suggests that the UN put into effect the Kyoto Protocol, which will promote cutting down on the use of greenhouse gases. This can help to cut down on ozone depletion, which will allow fewer harmful ultraviolet rays to enter the Earth’s atmosphere. This will help to slow the climate change process and diminish flooding in multiple nations, including Nigeria. The delegation of Nigeria is looking forward to working with allies to stop, or at least slow, the process of global climate shift.
