Denmark ambassador for disarmament and international security
Denmark remains deeply concerned by the threat posed by SALWs. Which is why Denmark has passed rigorous laws in an attempt to curve the violence caused by SALWs that can be demoralizing to societies.While we remain proud of our efforts over the last two decades that have lead us to average less then 100 SALWs related deaths each year. We realize there is much more Denmark can do both domestically and internationally to combat the threats posed by SALWs.
It has become apparent to Denmark that the efforts of this body and the United Nations as a whole have not been enough to combat one of the most serious global issues of the modern world. While Denmark does not wish to interfere with the affairs of the countries that guarantee their citizens the right to possess SALWs.We realize such countries must be willing to make changes domestically with the support of the international community if we are to successfully combat the spread of SALWs.
However, Denmark still believes there are ways in which the international community can work together to face the challenges posed by SALWs. Denmark is pleased to see the upcoming entrance into effect of the Arms Trade Treaty and hopes the international community can work together in good faith to ensure the implantation and enforcement of the treaty. However, the ATT is not enough on its own. While we cannot make it illegal for people to own SALWs. We can encourage them to Voluntary to give them up. Denmark has seen the effects a well-managed gun buyback program can have, and we see large potential for an international buyback program for SALWs sanctioned by the United Nations
While Denmark realizes, there is a place in the world for SALWs. We also realize the lack of regulations have allowed them to become an issue. Denmark remains willing to work with any countries to combat the serious issue of SALWs.
