Honduras, being a Latin American country, and in close proximity to many countries plagued with drug and weapon smuggling, wishes to curb the use of small arms and light weapon use. Drug and small arms trafficking take a major toll of all citizens of Honduras. Instilling fear in everyone around them, light arms debilitate the economy by undermining the education of their youth. They destroy the bonds of our community by obliterating our families. The country supports the Arms Trade Treaty in hope for it to address the many problems caused by light weapons.
Our small nation of eight million people, in 2008 alone, experienced over five thousand deaths by firearms. This outrageous cascade of innocent loss cannot be allowed to continue. Honduras is not alone in its struggle: countless other nations are plagued by similar tragedies. Not only is Honduras struggling with our death rate, but we are simultaneously struggling with our growth rate as well. The misuse of the weapons, their improper allocation, and the fall of the weapons into the wrong hands allow small firearms to tear the families and communities of our nations apart.
My fellow committee members: we, as the keepers of peace, as the advocates of safe and thriving nation-states, must not and cannot watch idly as the proliferation of small weaponry haunts our nations and our peoples. By taking action against small weaponry we can improve quality-of-life for all citizens and increase educational opportunities for generations to come. I urge you to stand as we carry the torch of free people into the future.
