The country of Rwandan believes that light arms are a serious problem they are cheap and easy to make with the added benefit of being easy to transport and ship it is estimated that there are currently 500 million small arms in circulation around the world. Rwandan being in Africa which is at the best of times only a mild peace has suffered man deaths of our citizens by small arms during the genocide to which the countries leaders of course deeply lament small arms were used to kill thousands of people as such we believe in the control of small arms.
Rwanda believes in how the U.N SALW The United Nations Programme of Action to Prevent, Combat and Eradicate the Illicit Trade in Small Arms and Light Weapons in All Its Aspects is the primary international framework for addressing trafficking, proliferation and misuse of SALW.
The Rwandan goverment has also taken steps to help track and insure its small arms are not misused, Over 1300 firearms have been marked by Rwanda National Police to-date using the MC 2000 electronic marking machine donated to the Government by RECSA. The Defense Forces are yet to start the marking exercise with equipment also provided by the Secretariat.
The death toll from small arms dwarfs that of all other weapons systems – and in most years greatly exceeds the toll of the atomic bombs that devastated Hiroshima and Nagasaki. with this said Rwanda would like all nations to try and help regulate and control small arms.
