As a country very familiar with Civil and Political unrest the Republic of Benin very much believes that the more peaceful the reaction the more successful the resolution. However we also firmly believe that these are issues that should be dealt with by the countries at hand. The international community is at best a safe zone in which leaders can agree upon terms of dispute without fear of threat. We need to be a middle ground to these confrontations and not fan the flames of violence which are dangerous to all affected in the conflict.
The United Nations is only as strong as its members are willing to accept its influence. If we try to force ourselves onto a government all we would be succeeding in is driving the country away and lessening the influence of this noble organization. In short we can’t help it if a country won’t accept our help we must just let it be. The last thing the world needs is a country forthright leaving the United Nations and to be completely outside our realm of influence. My own country the Republic of Benin struggled for years with internal power struggles and infighting but eventual we were able to establish a republic that only gets stronger every day. These issues are most effectively handled by their own countries and unless serious evidence is found of the abuse of the peoples of said countries, whose lives it is our mission to protect- the U.N. can only play a supporting role.
In terms of the division of protest and public assaults this is a case where in the separation is simple. Are these displays peaceful displays of public opinion or violent displays of power? Going back to the people for whom it is our duty to protect, If they are being harmed our response must be negative. Murder is not protest it is only just that. In Conclusion the United Nations must only stick its nose where it is wanted lest we run the risk of losing all we stand for.
