The ongoing protests all around the world have and will influence how a country is viewed and if these protests are influential enough, they will change a country and shake its foundations from the ground up. The most notable example would be America, whose formation was based off of peaceful protest and a desire for change. However, the most recent example would be protests in China where thousands of Chinese in Hong Kong protested for their rights for democratic elections. Civil protests have been the bane of many governments unwilling to change and because of this, the international community looks upon the countries going through these issues with uncertainty.
The state of Indonesia is no exception. Since our annexation as a country, we have experienced a couple political upheavals. One our first important ones being a failed coup leading to General Suharto becoming our president in 1967. Then in 1998 during a time of economic crisis in our state, president Suharto was overthrown for President B J Habibie. Our state soon after experienced more political turmoil in 1999 when East Timor voted for independence. Their independence was supported by the U.N. and because of this incident, the state was able to deal with the corruption surrounding the case and make peace with East Timor. Our state has dealt with the issue of political and civil unrest for quite some time with many militants in our country but, yet our state is able to make deal with these groups and tries to promote peace when we can.
The state of Indonesia believes in national sovereignty in dealing with matters of domestic civil and political unrest. However, the state also believes that U.N. intervention can be an important tool for settling these disputes before they become an issue for the international community. Our country will promote democracy and Islam as options to help resolve domestic disputes in other nations.
