It has become increasingly evident that events taking place across the globe such as the recent rise of ISIL in the middle east, the looming threat of conflict in eastern Ukraine, and the outbreak of Ebola in West Africa have all contributed to a growing number of refugees fleeing their native land in search of aid provided by nations both tolerable and accepting. To this end, South Africa takes a stand to help in whatever way possible to bring relief to those in need. This includes providing what little food and medical supplies we can spare. We stand with the UN’s efforts to secure a steady supply of food to where ever and when ever it is needed.
South Africa primarily seeks cooperation on these issues from both members of the United Nations and the countries composing The African Union. That being said, we have a proposal to not only combat and hopefully end hunger for starving refugees, but provide solutions that can ensure a future of stability for those escaping threats posed at home and abroad. Our plan is as follows:
•Short Term Solution – Streamlining the current asylum determination system to allow for a smoother flow of refugees to be granted asylum, relieving the current congestion of unsettled refugee cases.
•Medium Term Solution – Provide job creation programs to integrate those have completed the asylum determination system, into the labor force until they are eligible to return to their country of origin.
•Long Term Solution – Encourage and enable those who were granted asylum to voluntarily return to their nation of origin and be restored to full citizenship.
Giving these refugees a temporary home not only solves the issues regarding providing enough food for them, it also grants them many other basic human necessities such as medical supplies, shelter, and clothing. This can only work if all nations economically equipped to handle this influx of people will be willing to work together to achieve a common goal.
